In Chicago in the early 1920s there was a tough, poker-playing, hard-drinking female pickpocket whose specialty was removing gentlemen's jeweled tie tacks without being noticed. You kind of wonder how she got away with it, because Alberta Hunter said that she was so ugly she looked like a horse with a hat on.
